Now, I must say, I am not a big fan of coding for the Web, it really just isn’t my thing, but this did give me a chance to learn and appreciate some of the finer points.
I started with the idea that I love playing board games and wanted a way to track my plays with family and friends. Now, Board Game Geek provides this option, but, I hate it. It is clumsy, difficult to use etc etc and generally just seems to get lost in BGGs over proliferation of information.
Anyway, once I had the idea in mind, I wanted to make it as simple (and quick!) to use as possible, then be able to quickly be able to share your sessions with people, get statistics out, all that sort of thing, plus, it seemed like a nice project without too much complexity in order to do some learning.
With that, I started with an existing framework to give myself some leg up and save having to write a bunch of code and could quickly see results, I turned to Code Igniter for that and seeing I wanted what I produced to look semi decent, I looked to Bootstrap for the CSS.
After an initial learning period, I found it pretty easy to create what I needed, although I do find the lack of debug tools infuriating compared to what I am used to. But still very much a work in progress, some major pieces missing include Profile Page, Statsitics / Reporting, User Config, ‘Friends’…. etc etc etc
So, with that, here is Board and Scored
And an example of what a game session might look like here.
